Does the acronym SUD ring a bell for you? This term has been showing up recently in newer research articles. SUD stands for substance use disorder. In the new DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition: put out by the American Psychiatric Association (May 2013), substance abuse and substance dependence have now been combined into a single condition: SUD. While controversy over the efficacy of the new edition reigns in the medical profession, it is good to learn when new terminology has been introduced. Where addiction, disease of addiction, substance related disease and various other terms are currently commonly used, be aware of this new term. Want to learn more?
