Does the body-mind connection really exist? We hear a lot about how your thoughts can influence your body, usually connected to studies on athletes who visualize their sporting activities before a competition or with regard to the much-touted placebo effect. We get it. The mind directs the body. You have the thought and then you make the movement. But what is less talked about is that the body also directs the mind. Your posture and movement influence your thoughts, beliefs and state of mind. You already know that if youre having a bad day, smiling (even though you want to snarl in anger) lifts your mood and reduces stress. Its true all over your body. Rigid, routinized and mechanical movements beget rigid, routinized and mechanical thoughts. Slumped and contracted posture makes you feel down while expansive postures lift your mood. Ever heard that 90% of the thoughts you have today are the same ones you had yesterday? You cant out think your brain, but you can hack it. If you want to change your thoughts, change your body. The more creative your movement, the more neural connections youre forming, and the more impact youll have on your state of mind.
