Does wheat make us Fat and Sick? (Brouns, 2013) Here are the cliff notes of a review by Brouns et al investigating whether there holds any truth to the notion that wheat is making us fat and sick. - Populations such as turkey mainly consume wheat based products and show no indices of this particular ingredient causing weight gain. - Consumption of wheat grain products has been shown to reduce risks of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease risk, some types of cancer and favourable weight management. - No grounds to advise the general public not to consume wheat. - GM Wheat has not been marketed or down commercially in any country. It has only been used in research programs. - Wheat has technically been genetically modified via selective breeding programs. - Statements made in the book ‘Wheat Belly’ cannot be substantiated based on published scientific studies. - The statement ‘Wheat opioids are so addictive……’ has no data available to substantiate this. - Gluten sensitivity could effect 5-10% of the population. - Reducing or excluding certain rapidly fermentable carbohydrates could elevate symptoms which means its still unclear whether gluten proteins or other factors are involved. The authors summarise this review nicely with: “Wheat containing foods prepared in customary ways and eaten in recommended amounts have been associated with numerous health benefits. In particular, the regular consumption of wholegrain products has been shown to be associated with significant reductions for type 2 diabetes, heart disease and more favourable weight management.” I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. If you have any concerns regarding whether or not you have a gluten issue then please visit your doctor or experienced dietician.
