Does your dog have Addisons Disease or do you know anybody who has an Addisons dog? We received an email from Dr. Jared Jaffey about a study hes doing. If anybody is interested in participating in his study you can email him at drjaffey@gmail. Below is his email to us. My name is Jared Jaffey, I am a veterinarian at a specialty hospital in Ft Lauderdale florida. I have been working on a multi-center study for the last 2 yrs that focuses on a new protocol that optimizes addisonians treatment interval with Percorten at or near the recommended dose of 2.2mg/kg. Of the 35 dogs in the study thus far I have a median treatment interval of 70 days and I have multiple dogs go more than 90 days between Percorten injections. My goal is to achieve a study population of at least 50 client owned dogs and I was hoping you would consider getting involved. As im sure you know Westies are the #1 breed affected by this disease and I was hoping your involvement in adopting out Westies would know some people that would benefit from this study. I have listed the outline of the study below. Outline: Study population - Group 1: newly diagnosed, Group 2: previously diagnosed Each dog has their electrolytes evaluated 25-30 days after receiving their last Percorten injection and as long as their sodium is above 140 and their potassium is below 5.5 Percorten administration is withheld. They then have their electrolytes rechecked once a week until their sodium shifts below 140 and/or potassium above 5.5. The dogs interval then becomes 7 days less than the time it took for the shift to occur (example: if it took 97 days for the shift to occur the dogs new interval is 90 days). The dogs electrolytes are then checked again at the next due date to verify their interval. I look forward to hearing from you and hope you would consider taking part in this study. I am willing to cover a portion of the electrolyte rechecks so the owners will end up saving a lot of money long-term. Regards, Jared Jaffey, DVM, internal medicine intern
