Dog Day #3 Sorry I am so late today. I just spent the day in a whirlwind of introductions, interviews, meetings, and research. Much more of that in the days and weeks ahead. Do you know when someone is sitting in front of a large audience with a microphone in front of them. And that someone does not realize that his microphone is on (its called being hot as in a hot mic.) And then I am caught by the entire audience trying to tell a lame joke about bees in a classrom . . . you know? Well, that never happened, but I did discover a feature of Facebook I did not understand. That when you post in the Dunsmuir Political Forum and Cocktail Hour group, you are also posting to all your friends, all across the country. Go figure. And guess what. Several of my friends are getting all caught up in this. I have a friend in DC who is an attorney who can not believe what he saw in the April 1st meeting, or the April 3 walkout. I have a friend in Cupertino who is watching with interest from afar. And then there is Julie Schairer Snave, a high school friend of mine from back in northern Illinois who has all kinds of questions about who did what. Well Julie, I dont know if you remember, but I was on the Centralizer back at CHS. I really enjoyed being a reporter, and in one path in my life I could have been a political journalist. Well, there is a real beauty to be retired. You can pick your next avocation . . . and it does not have to involve being employed by a paper or website. When some injustice so outrages you that you just have to get up out of your seat and shed light on that injustice, you can. You just get up in the morning and start investigating. So that is what I am doing. I am hanging up my shingle. I am declaring myself to you, here, and to the world (particularly the courts where lawsuits are filed) to be a journalist. Everything I will say about the crimes in Dunsmuir California will be as a journalist. So there. Official. Well, with that in mind, I realize I need to take a moment to give everyone out there who has no idea what a Dunsmuir is a better introduction. Dunsmuir is a town just ten miles south of Mt. Shasta, which towers majestically on the citys horizon. It is a small city of about 2,000, with a beautiful historic district (see the pic.) What is amazing to me is that, on any given weekday, the town center is bustling with activity, cars parked up and down the main street. The city was historically a railroad town, with a major yard supporting the railroad line and employing many citizens. Historically, the town was also a center of lumber, with lumber mills employing many more citizens. Historically. Both the railroad yard and the lumber mills have gone, as they and other local industries have gone from small towns and cities across America. What makes Dunsmuir unique, though, and represents real hope for the future, is the incredible geography that wraps around the city. From Mt Shasta to the lakes and rivers around. The Sacramento River has its headwaters in Mt Shasta where the snows from the glaciers melt and bubble up out of a stream you can wiggle your toes in. Fishing here is fantastic. Incredible salmon, and the Sacramento River runs right through town, with all kinds of places to fly your bait. There is skiing in the winter nearby, and swimming and boating in Lake Siskiyou just up the road. Babe Ruth played a pickup game in the ball field here in town. And I must put in a plug, here. When you come to town, there are many great places to stay. But one of the best places to stay, in my mind, as at the Cave Springs Resort, in the Dewey family for years, now being running by a fine man, Louie Dewey. (When I moved here, I spent the first eight months staying in one of the resort cabins. Since that, I have lived in one of his apartments. :) ) Here: This might come in handy: cavesprings/ (So WHEN you come to visit Dunsmuir, if you stay at Cave Springs, tell Louie Bruce sent you. :) ) So, that is Dunsmuir. Add it to your Bucket List before you forget. Well theres trouble . . . right here in Dunsmuir City. And it starts with a C and it rhymes with dime and some might do time. Here is the headline: Three individuals conspire to defraud the City of Dunsmuirs Insurance Company, AND the City of Dunsmuir, AND four members of the City Council, for millions of dollars. Former Mayor of Dunsmuir Peter Arth, Council Woman Leslie Wilde, and City Attorney David Hicks. Now, as part of the ongoing conspiracy (aided by the votes and signatures of Council Man Welsh and Council Man Padula) David Hicks has been appointed as City Attorney, with Mayor Keisler and Council Man Steele refusing to take part in any way in his hiring, because they were aware of the illegal nature of this conspiracy. City Attorney David Hicks now has license to print money. He is already planning a trip to a City Attorneys Conference in San Diego (where he hopes to learn SOMETHING about what a City Attorney does) and charge the city $7000 for the trip. (he presumably will be flying first class). And to make everything just perfect, the contract that the four of them signed (Wilde, Welsh, Padula, and Hicks) had a special clause built in so that, if Council Woman Wilde is recalled June 3, the new member will be unable to fire the city attorney for four months. You know, standard legaleze. (Which Ryhmes with Sleeze.) So, to conclude, Come to Dunsmuir. Fish. Conspiracy to defraud. And to all my friends out there, who knows. Crap like this may be going on in a town or city near you.
