Dog Training, continued: Prison programs for dogs and cats Recognizing that well-socialized, trained dogs (and cats) are more likely to be adopted, many shelters across the country have initiated programs with local prisons. These programs offer a wide variety of training for animals; from “pet” programs (to help train and socialize dogs and cats to be suitable for adoption as pets), to service and assistance dog programs. They help the inmates, too, providing them with a sense of responsibility and accomplishment that is often not found within the walls of their confinement.
