Dog defies odds survives abuse and neglect Story Updated: Aug 30, 2014 Its unthinkable to believe that someone abandoned a dog, leaving him to die in a field with his mouth duct taped shut. “We dont know how he lived this long, because of the heat -- the dryness -- the lack of water and obvious lack of food,” said Keith Blackburn, Carlsbad City Councilman and volunteer with “It’s The Pits” dog rescue. “As you can see his body condition is horrific ... this dog was close to death,” said Dr. Scott DiLorenzo, with Animal Urgent Care in Escondido. Workers at a Coachella Valley animal shelter found Tundra” -- so named because of his resiliency, wondering in a field, emaciated and scarred from scratching at his facial tourniquet. Doctor DiLorenzo estimates that Tundra spent about week abandoned without water or food, and yet somehow survived. “This is one of the worst starvation cases Ive seen personally,” said Dr. Lorenzo. Doctor DiLorenzo says Tundra is about three to four years old and could be a mixed Pit Bull and/or American Bulldog. The Coachella valley shelter could not care for the animal, so made a desperate plea for help to area rescue groups ... Its the pits in Carlsbad answered the call for help. “I have never seen a dog this thin come through our shelter,” said Blackburn, “Its just unbelievable how much strength, energy, and will to live this dog has.” Carlsbad councilman and former police sergeant Keith Blackburn volunteers with the pit rescue organization. Hes bonded with Tundra and has paid out-of-pocket for the dogs initial treatment. “Its just scary to think there are humans out there that could do something like this to a dog,” said Blackburn. Tundra is now undergoing treatment at the Animal Urgent Care in Escondido. “Considering what he went through his spirits are incredible, hes probably one of the friendliest dogs I ever had to work with,” said Dr. Lorenzo. Doctor DiLorenzo says Tundra is eating and has put on some weight. The dog came in weighing just 38 pounds ... He should weigh at least 60 pounds. The doctor expects Tundra to make a full recovery. Councilman Blackburn wants to see Tundra go to a good home. “I think its a little bit of time, a little bit of nutrients and a lot of love,” said Blackburn.
