Dog helps family escape Brentwood house fire Originally published: July 17, 2013 12:44 PM Updated: July 17, 2013 1:05 PM By GARY DYMSKI gary.dymski@newsday A woman and her grandson, rousted by the family dog, escaped unharmed early Wednesday when their Brentwood home caught fire, a fire official for the hamlet said. Rob Kuehn, Brentwood fire marshal, said a call for a fire at a Hagen Street house came in at 5:27 a.m., with Brentwood Fire Department responding. Kuehn said the fire started on a deck in the back of the house and traveled up into the second floor. The woman, her grandson and Bear, a mastiff breed, were able to leave the home on their own, before firefighters arrived, Kuehn said. The Suffolk County Arson Squad is investigating the cause of the fire, which does not appear to be suspicious, Kuehn said. Kuehn also said the house appears to have suffered no structural damage but cannot be occupied until repairs are made. Firefighters brought the blaze under control in less than 30 minutes, Kuehn said. No injuries were reported. =
