Dogs in general, are optimistic and opportunistic creatures. One look in their eyes when youre eating, proves this theory. They just know that you want to share the bounty of your NY strip steak with them. Unfortunately, this opportunistic instinct creates a plethora of behavioral problems when you, your spouse or children, leave yummy things casually lying around the house. Leaving a slice of pizza on the coffee table while you take an important telephone call is like a joyous gift from heaven to an always hungry labrador. Though a slice of pizza isnt likely to put Fido in the ER, a chocolate filled Xmas stocking is a whole nother thing. Sure you do your best to secure the house and keep an eye open for counter surfing marauders while youre there, but what can you do when you cant be there 24X7? Heres a couple things you can do to protect your dog from the dangers of counter surfing. 1. If you cannot control the dog, you must control the environment. 2. Take out the trash, or at least secure it behind a closed door. (Remember that Xmas stocking? This is what trash is to a dog.) 3. Set a trap! Line the countertop with cans that will fall, make a horrendous racket and startle the bejesus out of Fido, when he goes to grab that tasty morsel. (Do make sure that nothing has the potential to do real physical harm... ) 4. Boundary training. You can either put up a baby gate or simply lay down a visual boundary. Work on the sit and stay command. Teach your pets that they are not allowed in that areas of the house. Reward them for compliance. Its much safer for everyone involved, especially if youre removing fried chicken from the oven if you dont have a dog underfoot. 5. As a last resort, you can also apply double stick tape to the edges of countertops to make their counter surfing experiences more unpleasant or you can use a Scat Mat or Scat Strip to give them a little zap when they go surfing. amazon/Radio-Systems-Corp-Scatmat-Strip/dp/B004MYOFLU/ref=sr_1_21?ie=UTF8&qid=1385327384&sr=8-21&keywords=shock+mats+for+dogs
