Dogs topple Knights in county meeting Okmulgee keeps playoff chances alive with 39-7 win By LARRY OWEN Times sports editor HENRYETTA - The Okmulgee Bulldogs kept their playoff chances alive here on Friday night with a 39-7 win over the host Henryetta Golden Knights. The Bulldogs will need to defeat Kellyville at home this coming Friday night to punch their ticket to the postseason for the first time since 2009. The loss puts the Knights’ dreams of a playoff spot in serious jeopardy with Henryetta needing to win their final two games, plus have Inola, Morris, and Okmulgee finish with one less win. The Henryetta squad will close out their 2013 season with a trip to Inola this coming Friday and a home meeting with the Beggs Golden Demons on November 8th. As it stands right now, the district standings in 3A-6 are as follows: Victory Christian is first at 5-0, followed by Beggs in second at 3-1. Inola sits in third at 2-2, while Okmulgee holds down the fourth spot at 2-3. There is a 3-way tie for fifth with Morris, Kellyville, and Henryetta at 1-3. The Bulldogs won the opening coin toss and elected to defer to the second half, giving the Knights the first crack at putting points on the scoreboard. Henryetta would begin its first offensive series at its own 24. The Knights would go three and out on their first possession, punting the ball to the Bulldogs with 10:25 left in the opening quarter. Starting at the OHS 49, the visitors would need seven plays to go the 51 yards, taking three minutes, 22 seconds off the gameclock to draw first scoring blood. The 7-play drive would be capped off when Trevion James took the handoff and raced five yards to paydirt. Chris Brown toed the PAT to give the Bulldogs the early 7-0 lead with 7:03 remaining in the opening frame. The Henryetta offense would turn the ball over on downs at the OHS 49 with 3:49 left in the first after a pair of runs for losses on 2nd and 4 at the OHS 36. The Bulldogs would need only five plays to march the 51 yards to double their lead to 14-0 with 1:22 remaining in the opening quarter. The final play of the drive would come on a 25-yard scamper by QB Brad Bell. Brown once again made good on the extra point kick to send Okmulgee into the second stanza with a 14-0 advantage. Both teams exchanged punts to begin the second quarter, then the first turnover of the contest would come at the 8:17 mark, as Okmulgee’s Chris Morgan pounced on a loose football at the HHS 31. With the great field position, the Bulldogs would make it a 20-0 contest with 5:59 left in the first half. The OHS offense would need only five plays to cover the 31 yards, ending with D.J. Wallace’s 8-yard TD run. The extra point kick was off the mark to give the visitors a 20-0 advantage. On the ensuing kickoff, the host Knights would get on the scoreboard, as Devin Longan took the kick at his 19 and raced 81 yards down the Henryetta sideline for the special teams score. Joseph Watson would tack on the PAT to make it a 20-7 score with 5:46 remaining in the second quarter. Henryetta would attempt an onside kick, but the Bulldogs would fall on the short kick at the Henryetta 49 with 5:40 left in the first half. It would take Okmulgee one play to respond to Longan’s long return, as DeMarea Bryant took the handoff and raced around the left side of the offensive line 49 yards into the end zone at the 5:30 mark of the second stanza. Brown’s successful PAT kick would send the Bulldogs to the halftime break with a 27-7 advantage. The final tallies for Okmulgee would come in the third quarter on a pair of QB keepers by Bell. The freshman signal caller found the end zone at the 9:46 mark of the third on a 2-yard run that capped a 7-play, 55-yard, drive to begin the second half. The holder was tackled by the Knights after a low snap on the extra point kick to make it a 33-7 contest. Henryetta would punt on its first offensive series of the second half, giving the Bulldogs the ball at their own 32 with 7:42 left in the third. Okmulgee would go on a 10-play drive to cover the 68 yards, taking up five minutes, 35 seconds to put the finishing touches on the one-sided victory. The Bulldogs would get runs of 3 and 6 by Bryant and Wallace on the first two plays from scrimmage, then the OHS squad was hit with a 5-yard penalty, making it 3rd and 6 from the OHS 36. Delton Bagby would pick up the first down with a 14-yard run to midfield. After Bell gained eight yards on the next play, Wallace would carry the football for gains of 2 and 5 yards, respectively, to move the ball to the Henryetta 35 for a 2nd and 5 situation. The Bulldogs would lose two yards on the next play, then Wallace gained back the two yards to make it a 4th and 5 at the HHS 35. The OHS offense would pick up the first down on a 10-yard pass from Bell to Bryant, moving the chains to the HHS 25. Bell would then call his own number on the next snap, racing up the middle of the line for the 25-yard TD run - the fourth score for the freshman signal caller in the game. The PAT kick would be blocked at the line to make it a 39-7 contest with 2:07 left in the third. There would be no further scoring in the final 14:07 to give the visiting Bulldogs the 39-7 victory.
