Doing some reading on who controlled a certain bit of land for an idea in a story, I decided to go down the Wikipedia rabbit hole to see who has controlled the lands in which I was born in throughout history. In reverse order: Modern Romanian state Socialist Republic of Romania (when I was born) Hapsburg Kingdom of Hungary/Austria-Hungary (early 20th Century) Kingdom of Hungary Bulgarian Empire Avar Empire Kingdom of the Gepids Hunnic Empire Dacian Kingdom under Burebista Germanic tribes Sarmatians Dacians Rome (up to 400 AD) Celts Geto-Dacians (now we’re back to Iron Age) Wietenberg (Bronze Age) Noua Monteoru Otomani Periam-Pecica/Mureş Baden/Coţofeni Bodrogkeresztúr-Gorneşti (Neolithic era) Decea Mureşului Petreşti Turdaş Starčevo-Criş Tardenoisian (Mesolithic era - 10,000 years ago) Schela Cladova Unknown tribal dudes who left tools (Epipaleolithic era - 13,000 years ago) Different unknown tribal dudes (Paleolithic - up to 2.6 million years ago) So, yeah. If anyone tries to say a given ‘land is theirs historically’, they’re full of shit. In the 20th century alone the land of my birth had at least three national identities, and that’s before you get into the local level stuff like regional or ethnic identities, which themselves changed damn near as fast.
