Doing the lit review in my thesis. I came across a somewhat highly cited paper which I dont quite understand what the point of. Came up with the idea of looking what at what other people cite it for as a shortcut to trying to make sense of it myself, but realised that all of the citations fall along the lines of `this is a really cool and awesome field which has attracted lots of interest [dump a whole lot of citations]. Idea siah -- at least the time spent reading and trying to make sense of an incomprehensible paper isnt completely wasted when it can be cited like this to pad the reference count when necessary :p Edit : But i think the authors must be super sian that although the paper is somewhat highly cited nobody, at least in the examples Ive seen, engaged with their paper more meaningfully.
