Doing the unthinkable - Historical Archaeology in Israel! An unexpected day off yielded the following short documentary which captures historical ruins and artifacts from the Ottoman and British Mandate period in Israel. Archaeological and landscape impressions were gathered by surveying the outskirts of Israels central district. A range of installations, buildings and small finds shed light on the historical turmoil, industries and people shaping this turbulent location. After the fall of the Crusader Kingdom and the following skirmishes taking place between Islamic dynasties, the region was brought under the control of the Ottoman Empire in 1516. Old and well preserved lime kilns, a fortress, and Turkish Ottoman ruins are scattered in the landscape. In addition, musket bullets, clay pipes, and 19th century medical gear are among the small finds discovered and documented in the terrain, shedding light on the various people who lived, fought and explored the region. Including Arab and Jewish communities, Turks, French soldiers from the Napoleonic era, and the English. Note: Any reinterpretations of small finds or standing buildings are welcomed. This is not peer-reviewed material but an off duty hike in which we took the time to explore the remains of the Ottoman and early modern periods. Some finds such as glass tubes might be more familiar to people from Western Europe and the UK and it would be interesting to hear opinions. https://vimeo/112855742
