Dollar General generating jobs in the Yuba-Sutter area. Story from the Appeal-Democrat. Posted: Friday, January 24, 2014 12:06 am Andrew Creasey/Appeal-Democrat A string of Dollar General stores opening in Yuba-Sutter in the past few months has helped the unemployment rate in the area. Four stores of the nationwide chain have opened in Yuba and Sutter counties and a fifth is in the works. All told, the new additions to the community will add between 24 and 40 jobs. What we have in Yuba County is a trend in higher unemployment rates than the state or nation, said John Fleming, the countys economic development coordinator. Any new retail operation is a benefit for us in helping reduce those numbers. Yuba Countys unemployment rate is 13.3 percent. The development began in Live Oak in October with a 17,000-square-foot store that added between six and 10 part- and full-time jobs. City officials estimate the store will generate $2 million in taxable sales and stimulate further development on Highway 99. Three more stores are under construction in Yuba County. A 7,200-square-foot store in Marysville on 10th and B Streets will open in mid-February and have six to 10 employees, said Crystal Ghassemi, company spokeswoman. In Olivehurst, a 7,400-square-foot store on Highway 70 and McGowan Parkway will open in mid-spring, Ghassemi said. In Wheatland, a 17,000-square-foot store will occupy eight retail spaces in the mostly vacant Settlers Village shopping center. The store will open in mid-March, Ghassemi said. The company could also open a fifth store in Linda, Fleming said. Every store includes three full-time positions with a competitive benefit package. The rest of the jobs are part-time, Ghassemi said. Ghassemi declined to provide salary or wage information. And the company is still hiring. At a recent hiring event at the Yuba County One-Stop, the company hired 18 of the 19 applicants. The company plans to open 700 stores across the country in 2014, and California could see additional stores as part of that expansion, Ghassemi said.
