Domestic labor working in schools KUWAIT: In view of the ongoing inspection campaigns and crackdowns on illegal residents and other violating various laws, a number of school administrations recently noticed a number of workers who used to do cleaning work at the schools absenting from work and later justifying their absence by citing fear of being arrested during the inspections. After a school principal became curious to find out why the workers were missing from work, she checked their civil IDs to discover that all of them held article 20 residency visas, which meant that they were deserting domestic laborers. In this regard, educational sources said that the ‘maids’ were supplied by a company that drives them to schools at 7:00 am and picks them up by 1:30 pm, charging the ministry KD 70 per maid, of which the maid only gets KD 50 while the representative pockets KD 10. Moreover, the sources warned that in view of any school’s need for at least 10 such workers each, it meant that many of them might suffer a shortage of cleaning staff next year.
