Domestic violence is one of those things you might not be able to - TopicsExpress

Domestic violence is one of those things you might not be able to understand without firsthand knowledge. This being my first job directly working with domestic violence, I struggle with a deeper understanding of the impact domestic violence causes victims, their families, and our communities. I struggle with this because, while my family undoubtedly has a lot of skeletons in the closet, I grew up in a relatively stable home. I was taught that violence is NOT acceptable and never the answer. I struggle because I never felt unsafe or threatened in my home. The fellas in my family, namely my Dad and Granddad, showed me that no matter what mistakes I make, Im worthy of safety, love, and happiness. I struggle with a deeper understanding of the impact of domestic violence. What I do understand, however, is safety and (relative) happiness in the home should be a RIGHT, but in some households, its still just a PRIVILEGE that many women dont have. The first thing I am thankful for this November is that my Grandfather and Dad gave me the privilege(s) of safety, happiness, and a sense of self-worth.
