Dominican Republic Mission Trip Journal - Day 3 Thursday, May - TopicsExpress

Dominican Republic Mission Trip Journal - Day 3 Thursday, May 29 We began the morning with a breakfast of pancakes, eggs, and fruit. At 8:30 we set out for our third village of Los Fundos. It took us almost an hour to reach the village, as it was much more remote than the villages from yesterday. Los Fundos only has about 50 people, and this village consisted primarily of pieced-tin shacks rather than the small houses that filled the streets of the villages yesterday. Most of the men in the village worked in the sugarcane fields, and we passed them working as we arrived. We took a walk down the main dirt road of the village to recruit children to come play with us. We headed to the ball field with only one child. That grew to two, then six, and by the time word had spread that we were there, we ended with about 30. The students played kickball, soccer, volleyball, football, and baseball with the children. The girls painted fingernails for the children and had their hair braided by a local woman. A group of young girls even climber up on top of the home dugout to give us a singing performance. We are not exactly sure what they sang, but at one point they put their hands over their hearts, so we believe that it was the Dominican Republic national anthem. :) We finished with a devotional, during which Jordyn, Shane, and Jodi gave their testimonies to the group. Coach Sanfratello wrapped up the group time with a short message to the children. After a group photo and lots of goodbye hugs, we loaded the bus for the trip back to the complex. For lunch, we had chicken strips, boiled potatoes, french fries, and pasta salad. We loaded up at 1:30 to head to Los Montones. The trip took about 45 minutes and ended in some very bumpy roads on which the bus bottomed out a few times. This village was not as spread out as the one this morning, but was primarily one really long road. The village was home to about 400 people. Once we arrived, we began at the village ball field and walked down the main gravel road to recruit kids to come play with us. As we reached the school, we learned that the students were testing, and it would be a few minutes before they were out. We managed to pick up a few smaller children to head back to the ball field to play. The children jumped rope and played several different games with the sports balls that we brought. The afternoon was really hot, so many of the team members and children gravitated toward the shade. After playing for a couple of hours, we finished with a devotional. Ethan, Carli, Logan, and Brandi gave their testimonials to the group. After the group photo, the students passed candy out to the kids there. As we drove away in the bus, the children ran behind us waving and yelling goodbye to us. Once we arrived back at the complex, we prepared for our Argentine barbecue dinner. The dinner was served under the canopy back in the Score employee part of the complex by the local Dominican pastors. The meal was a fundraiser for their local ministry. We had plank steak, chicken, sausage, and ribs, as well as potato salad and muffins. Following dinner, we had our Score Night devotional. This time we met in the Upper Room at the Score complex. In addition to our group, we had the MTSU sports girls with us again as well as a group of 13 from Shenandoah Valley Christian in Virginia. We opened the devo with two songs, and Thomas and Shelbi shared their thoughts of the week so far. We sang one more song, and then Dr. Bob, the dental and medical physician with Score, delivered the message tonight in our devotional on Spiritual Warfare on the Battlefield of Missions. After his message we heard from a Score intern about the GAP Year program and the Child Sponsorship programs from Score. Afterwards, we had free time until curfew at 10:30.
