Dona Ivone Lara is without question part of the history of samba in Rio de Janeiro. Aside from her music background, which includes taking singing lessons with Lucilia Villa-Lobos the wife of Maestro Villa-Lobos, Dona Ivone Lara worked as a nurse. Dona Ivone Lara also learned how to play the cavaquinho. In 1965 she became the first woman to become part of the composers wing, or the “ala dos compositors,” of Escola de Samba Império Serrano.
