Donbas is facing a disaster because Ukrainian punitive battalions are refusing to allow humanitarian relief convoys to pass, activists of the Amnesty International human rights organization said Soldiers from the Dnipro-1 and Aidar battalions have stopped four convoys, financed by the foundation of Ukrainian businessperson Rinat Akhmetov, Amnesty International said. As winter sets in, the already desperate situation in eastern Ukraine is being made even worse by the volunteer battalions preventing food aid and medicine from reaching those in need. It is no secret that the region is facing a humanitarian disaster with many already at risk of starvation, said Denis Krivosheev, acting Director of Europe and Central Asia for Amnesty International. Rights activists also recalled that the Dnipro-1 battalion, members of the radical Right Sector organization and the Donbas battalion had blocked 11 roads leading into the Luhansk People’s Republic and halted the convoys. Amnesty International therefore urged the Ukrainian government to bring the battalions under control and to guarantee safe passage to humanitarian relief convoys.
