Donkey Club SKIATHOS The miracle donkey milk A severe skin problem finding no cure was the reason for the creation in the beautiful island of Skiathos of a small, but stunning donkey farm by the 23 year-old Panagiotis Kalogiannis, who in his quest to cure the psoriasis plaque not only succeeded with the help of the milk of those sympathetic animals, but also changed his whole life. Being previously a farmer, he soon became a breeder and now deals exclusively with donkey milk production; a real treasure, as the selling price per litter ranges from 50 to 100 euros. His involvement with donkey breeding began about 14 months ago and since then he has developed infrastructure standards with full respect for the tradition of the island, creating new perspectives in the field of tourism. The unique donkey breeder in Skiathos has set as his target the preparation and export of donkey milk, famous for its beneficial and general healing properties since ancient times, whilst creating a theme park focusing on the animals he breeds. The big step was made about a year ago, after a period of intense reflection and search. His goal was to do something innovative. Now, after one year of trials, he has already begun experimenting towards the processing of milk for creating soaps based on olive oil from his own production, aromatic plants and herbs grown on his farm at Saint Anthony and donkey milk derived from the animals he breeds. At the present stage the milk production is small and the aim of Panagiotis is to gradually increase the herd in order to achieve the expected craft activity in the near future. Furthermone he protects an endangered species, as from 508,000 donkeys existing in Greece in 1955, in 1995 there were 95,000, in 2005 20,400 and in 2006 only 18,173. 42.5% of the population is located in the Peloponnese, where there is a unique Greek breed, the Arcadian donkey mentioned in Homer and Xenophon. Lets see, however, the beneficial properties of donkey milk: -The donkey milk is relatively low in total solids (8-10%) and protein (1.5 to 1.8%). -It has high lactose content (6-7 %). -The fat content ranges from 0.28 % to 1.82%, depending on the time of the year. -It is of similar composition and wholesomeness with breast milk. -It has anti-aging and antioxidant properties and regenerative ingredients. -It is the ideal substitute of breast milk if the baby has an allergy. -It contains the essential fat acids Omega-3 and Omega-6 which help in the absorption of vitamins. -Its acids offer elasticity and help prevent certain diseases, such as eczema and psoriasis. -It improves the healing process. -Its metal salts contribute to the cleaning of the skin and to dead cells removal with a view to regeneration.
