Donkeys, Servants, Slaves So Samuel said, “When you were little in your own eyes, were you not head of the tribes of Israel? And did not the Lord anoint you king over Israel?” 1 Samuel 15:17 Samuel was going to give Saul the words God had spoken to him the night before. They were going to be words of judgment against Saul; they were God’s words, not Samuel’s words. Notice, God took him back to the beginning. He was reminding him who he really was. At the beginning, Saul was a humble man. He was small in his own eyes, not prideful. When he was young and humble, the Lord anointed Saul to be king over Israel. God was not looking for a great man to be the first king of Israel. He was looking for a humble man—a man who would rely upon the Lord. He would not be big in his own eyes, so he would walk in obedience to the Lord. That is what God is looking for today. He wants men and women who are humble. They know they are not great and powerful. They know they need the Lord, every day, in order to do whatever God calls them to do. God is looking for donkeys, servants, slaves. When God starts to use your life, do not get puffed up with pride. Do not start to talk about all the great things you are doing. Stay humble and remember; you are not doing anything. You are simply the tool God is using to accomplish His will. Without Him, you would have no purpose. Without Him, you would have no ministry. Pastor Raul Ries
