Aiello is a career veteran of the United States Air Force and has served in various states and countries coordinating security issues with domestic and host nation representatives, developing and managing budgets and assisting in design and oversight of construction projects, among others. The 53-year-old was a volunteer in Westerly Public Schools for seven years and is in his third year of employment as a school recess aide and substitute teacher assistant. Aiello wants student achievement gaps to continue to close, and he supports making preschool more widely available and financially viable. He believes in proper facility maintenance and giving students programs that empower them. Aiello also believes in neighborhood elementary schools, but said he will remain open to new ideas, including the option the advisory committee presented this month: building one new large school that would house all of the district’s elementary school students. “One of the things you have to think about with that option is breakfast and lunch for that many students,” Aiello said. “In particular, breakfast.
