Dont I have to review my mistakes so I can learn from them? My - TopicsExpress

Dont I have to review my mistakes so I can learn from them? My response, Yes, but not while youre playing, or youll lose the Groove, and reinforce your mistakes. In fact, when you let go of mistakes and get right back to what you want to be doing, you reinforce what you want to be doing, and you wont feel the need to review what you did not want to be doing This exchange happened between a student and me recently, and helps to reinforce one of my principle Life Rhythm lessons: When we make mistakes, immediately get back to what we WANT to be doing. My student, an older man who was at the beginning of his rhythm journey, and tended to let mistakes derail his Groove, exclaimed, I get it... thank you! Ive always beat myself up for not being perfect, and that just gets in the way of making progress. So true! When we react to mistakes with frustration, self-anger, embarrassment, or fear of making more mistakes, we reinforce those emotions, and actually reinforce the mistakes. When we react to the mistakes that are a natural part of learning by immediately getting back to what we want to be doing, we reinforce both that which we want to do, and our ability to let go of mistakes... thusly making fewer of them... this is progress. Acknowledging, and celebrating, progress reinforces the actions that created it... leading to fewer mistakes and more progress! Life is a blessing... celebrate it!
