Dont blame the victim! Pack the courtroom! In a shocking case of blaming the victim, Allison Ben—a young African-American woman with three children--is being threatened with eviction because of the “disturbances” caused by the father of her oldest child, who on several occasions came to her apartment and beat her. Representatives of several organizations—including the Coalition of Labor Union Women, the National Organization for Women and domestic abuse shelters—have sent letters protesting this victim-blaming to the Director of the Inkster Housing Commission, Ernestine Carter. Your support is vital! Twice the hearing has been postponed. It is now scheduled for Tuesday, April 1st in 22nd District Court, 27331 S River Park, Inkster 48141. The hearing is scheduled for 2PM. We ask that you come at 1:30 so we can demonstrate outside before the court is in session. Allison Ben has obtained PPOs against this man and has reported violations to the police. But security at the public housing, which is the Inkster Police Department, told her she would be evicted for reporting domestic violence! When she did call them to report a brutal attack, Inkster Public Housing served her with an eviction notice three days later! For last minute developments, please go to the web site of Detroit Eviction Defense (detroitevictiondefense.org) the evening beforehand in case there is yet another postponement. Remember, check the website for possible changes, otherwise well see you Tuesday, April 1st in 22nd District Court, 27331 S River Park, Inkster 48141 at 1:30pm.
