Dont forget the Leesfees this upcoming weekend in Prince Albert. KAROO FEAST … A LITERARY TREAT FOR READERS 8 – 10 November 2013 in Prince Albert This popular readers’ fest promises something for everyone. Boer War buffs, foodies, budding younger readers & writers … and especially those who want to get up close and personal with the authors. It’s a Karoo week-end too good to miss. There are 14 events to choose from running one after another so you don’t have to miss a thing. Authors such as Riana Scheepers, Carol Campbell, Chanette Paul, Abraham de Vries, Patricia Glyn, Dolf van Niekerk, and loads more offer you a unique literary feast. The programme begins at 6.30pm on Friday with the local launch of Kokkedoor Resepteboek a spin-off from the smash-hit Kyknet TV series filmed in Prince Albert. Nic van Wyk and Hetta van Deventer discuss “the story behind the book” with author Errieda du Toit. Former Prince Alberter Carol Campbell and translator Kirby van der Merwe discuss My Children have Faces/Karretjiemense with Patricia Glyn. Giving an insider’s look at the little families who traverse the Karoo with all their worldly goods in a donkey cart. Another local is Monica Thomas who self-published her family’s humorous, sometimes poignant, tales in Nokkie se stories. The formidable duo of writer Riana Scheepers and artist Hannetjie de Clercq discuss their collaborative work, Purpur en kaneel, komyn en smarag and Die Stilte in Myself. Riana also chats with local gourmand, Bokkie Botha, over breakfast about her new cookbook, Vallei van melk en heuning. Best-selling thriller writer Chanette Paul teams up with writer Rachelle Greeff to discuss her latest work Siende Blind. And historian, Chris Schoeman, has three new books of special importance for those with an interest in history, Angels of Mercy: Foreign Women in the Anglo-Boer War, Churchill’s South Africa: Travels during the Anglo-Boer War and The Historical Karoo. Corina van der Spoel, a director of the Mail & Guardian’s Literary Festival, takes Abraham de Vries [Maar wie snoei die rose in die nag?] and Dolf van Niekerk [Bleek planet] through their Karoo-inspired writing. And broadcaster, Patricia Glyn, talks to Prof Judy Maguire about her remarkable journey into the Kalahari with a handful of Bushmen in What Dawid Knew. For a complete change of pace you can also see a heart-warming play by Jan Groenewald Daar was ‘n tyd. A love story, it takes place between the end of the Anglo-Boer War and Armstrong’s moon landing interwoven with film clips and a score composed by Du Preez Strauss. Lucy Corne author of African Brew: Exploring the Craft of South African Beer and Jacques Conradie, winemaker and brewer at Karusa offer a new spin on Sunday lunch with local libertarian Colin Bower pairing beers with a delicious 3-course lunch. A fringe performance by Toast Coetzer and his spoken-word band, The Buckfever Underground, host a completely off-the-cuff improvisation at the ‘barn’ alongside Gay’s Guernsey Dairy.
