Dont miss the 18 Nov JKP Google Hangout: Prof Haroon Bhorat is a panelist for the interactive, online discussion on Minimum wages as an instrument to reduce poverty in emerging markets. Run by the World Bank’s Jobs and Development project, the live discussion takes place on Tuesday, Nov 18th @ 9-10AM EST; 4PM SAST. Other participants: Uma Rani (Research Department, International Labour Office); Dr. Carl Lin (Assistant Professor, Beijing Normal University); Ximena Del Carpio (Senior Economist, World Bank); Albert Park (moderator | Director of HKUST Institute for Emerging Market Studies (IEMS)) In recent years, the minimum wage has become an increasingly popular policy instrument to reduce inequality in many emerging markets, but to date there has been little systematic comparison of country experiences to assess how the role and impact of minimum wages are different than in OECD countries. One challenge in emerging and developing economies is how to enforce minimum wage regulations when a large share of the labor force is employed in the informal sector. In this Google Hangout online discussion, leading experts on minimum wage regulations in India, South Africa, China, and Southeast Asia will discuss the political forces behind minimum wage setting, the extent of compliance with minimum wage regulations, evidence on the impact of minimum wages on employment and wages, and the policy implications, if any, that can be drawn based on these experiences. We’ll be taking questions from members of the audience throughout the discussion, and would love to hear any feedback you might have or questions you’d like to pose! bit.ly/iems-gplus-sm
