Dont miss the chance to learn from a highly acclaimed, award-winning speaker co-sponsored by the PTO as part of Community Parent Network (a committee of the Stevenson H.S. Foundation) and Deerfield Parent Network! Dr. Ken Ginsburg, nationally renowned adolescent pediatrician, professor at University of Pennsylvania, and contributor to the film Race to Nowhere, will present two free programs: Thursday, November 7th: 9am-11am Building Resilience: Giving Kids Roots and Wings at North Shore Unitarian Church in Deerfield. The research is clear. Success depends more on resilience than on grade point average, high-stakes tests, or college prestige. What is resilience? Dr. Ginsburg will explain, exploring his 7 Cs Model of Resilience and offering practical strategies to help parents foster resiliency. AND 7pm-9pm Authentic Success: Raising Youth To Thrive at Stevenson H.S. PAC in Lincolnshire. As much as parenting is about thinking on your feet and meeting your child’s needs today, Dr. Ginsburg reminds us that our longterm goal is to raise thriving 35-year-olds. Rather than trying to smooth their children’s paths, what can parents do to develop their children’s emotional and social intelligence? Dr. Ginsburg is a nationally renowned pediatrician whose groundbreaking research in the field of Adolescent Medicine puts him at the forefront of his field. Dr. Ginsburg is currently Associate Medical Editor of The American Academy of Pediatrics’ Parenting Web Page, Healthychildren.org. He is a key contributor to the film Race to Nowhere and he appears frequently in the national media and on the lecture circuit. His website is: fosteringresilience/about.php What parents say about Dr. Ginsburg: Dr. Ginsburg’s message was outstanding, accessible, and practical -- and parents responded with a prolonged (and well-deserved) ovation at the end of his talk. Absolutely terrific. Dr Ginsburg empowers parents to raise children who love, accept, and protect themselves. Opportunities for Follow-Up Discussion and Networking with Other Parents: Wednesday, Nov. 13 9:30am-11am Vernon Area Public Library in Lincolnshire. Facilitated by District 96 Superintendent, Julie Schmidt. Follow-up discussion open to ALL parents (who attended Dr. Ginsburgs talks or not) to discuss what was learned and application to our parenting. RSVP is encouraged for the 11/7 and 11/13 programs and to be eligible for a drawing to win one of Dr. Ginsburgs books (must be present to win): https://drkenginsburg.eventbrite Two book talks moderated by librarian, Kate Easley, at the Deerfield Public Library, based on Dr. Ginsburg’s books: Book Talk #1: Building Resilience in Children and Teens: Giving Kids Roots and Wings, Wed., Nov. 20, 2013 at 7:00 p.m., Deerfield Public Library.
