Dont panic! Please do not try to place where in town this early 1940s wartime photograph of a 1934 Bournemouth Sunbeam trolleybus was taken - Clue, it would be useful for a trip to Ilford but absolutely not to Iford! The vehicle pictured is an early production example of the one hundred similar trolleybuses which had not long before replaced our local trams. However it was photographed here doing its wartime duty along with several other Bournemouth stablemates up in London on their busy suburban No.691 service. In due course this trolleybus came safely home and doubtless once more served Iford and not Ilford. The Bournemouth trolleybuses loaned to London were replaced later in the war by two batches of UK built trolleybuses intended for export to South Africa. These were retained domestically by the Ministry of Supply who deemed it too risky to ship them through the U-boat infested merchant shipping channels.
