Dont think I have posted this here before. The Vought XF5U Flying - TopicsExpress

Dont think I have posted this here before. The Vought XF5U Flying Flapjack, designed by genius Charles H. Zimmerman, was a good example of a low aspect wing aeroplane. It was meant to take off and land at very low speeds, but at the same time have been able to reach high speeds (885 km/h). A very maneuverable fighter, the proof of concept, the V-173 prototype flew successfully, proving the advantages of such a design. Two prototypes of the XF5U were built, but testing didnt go beyond short hops that cannot be verified. The project was cancelled mainly because it was not a jet, at a time when the US Navy was transitioning from piston engine to turbojet propelled aircraft. I made this model for a History Channel documentary many years ago.
