Don’s Daily Parable-Ain’t Nothin’ Like That-7/26/2013 The first time that I was in that full body cast, I would have to go to Houston about every 3 months for a doctor visit. They would xray my hip and see if it had healed enough to take the cast off. At that time, we had some kind of car that was a two door hardtop, which was not designed to carry a person in a full body cast. My Dad had a pickup, but I would have had to ride to Houston in the bed of it. Not good. At that time, we lived across the highway from Mitchell’s Drive Inn. The building is still there and it is kind of the same thing… what we used to call a beer joint. Mother and Daddy frequented it and Burley’s Drive In, which was just down the highway. Anyway, to make a long story even longer, my Dad went to the Chevrolet dealer in town and they let him borrow a Chevrolet station wagon. He brought that home and then he went to Mitchell’s Drive In and got about 4 guys to come over to the house and put me into the back of that station wagon. They carried me out of the house like a log. It felt so good to be out of the house. Even during the trip to Houston, lying on my back, I could see the cars and scenery along the way. That was wonderful. That was the first time I’d been anywhere outside the house in months. I remember when the xray showed that it wasn’t completely healed, but the doctor let me out of the cast for a few months. They would have to perform yet another surgery on my hip. You have no idea how good it felt to be out of that thing. I can’t describe it. That was after being in it for almost 7 months. Pat and I were dating (it was all her, she would come over to our house), and I told her that I had to be put back in the cast for 3 more months. She came over that evening, and I managed to stand up on crutches and surprised her. That was pretty emotional for both of us. How many times do we judge people because they drink, or smoke, or use bad language? Most of those folks would give you the shirt off their back, just like these 4 guys helping with me. They have good hearts. Please don’t take people at face value. You will either be disappointed or pleasantly surprised. Give people a chance. God loves them just like they are and He sent His Son to die on a horrible cross for their sins. Ain’t nothin’ like that. God bless you.
