Don’t Become Dry and Break Off “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.” John 15:5-6 While teaching His disciples, Jesus shared how He is the vine and we are the branches. We can imagine if Jesus stood in a hair salon speaking to a group of 21st century women, He would probably say, “I am the scalp and you are the hair. She that stays connected to Me will not become dry and break off. Those that break off are swept up and thrown in the trash. Apart from Me, you can do nothing. Stay in me and I in you. Only I can properly condition you and make you healthy, beautiful and strong.” Like hair, you can either be spiritually strong or weak. You can either be well-conditioned or extremely dry and brittle. As long as you stay vitally connected to God, you will be conditioned and strong, able to withstand anything. Apart from Him, you will dry up and break away. Maybe you were once completely dedicated to God and focused on pleasing only Him, but after you were met with challenges in life you took your eyes off of God. Then you look up and wonder, “How in the world did I get here?” We all lose sight of what’s important sometimes, but the good news is, if you have become dry and have broken away from the things of God, you don’t have to stay there. You can return to God and He will do the most beautiful spiritual sew-in you’ve ever seen! For the sake of this light-hearted and humorous analogy, let’s not cause Jesus to only have a few healthy strands on His head. He should have a head full of glorious hair! Let’s stay strong in our faith, healthy, connected, nourished, well-conditioned, and dedicated to the things of God. Prayer: Thank You Lord that You have a sense of humor. I pray that You help me to stay connected to You. I don’t want to live dry and stagnant spiritually. Make me healthy and well-conditioned for Your glory. If I have broken off from You, please forgive me and put me back in right standing with You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
