Don’t Hold Elections Next Month In Adamawa, Gov Ngillari Tells INEC — Jan 21, 2015 Adamawa State governor Bala Ngillari, yesterday asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to suspend the conduct of elections in Adamawa State because the state was not suitable for next month’s elections. The governor who argued that elections in the state should be suspended until April said as the chief security officer of the state, the state was not suitable for elections as seven local governments are under siege. He added that lives are more important than elections and that the suspension should be done to allow for proper rehabilitation of persons affected by the insurgency. Ngaliri who spoke at an INEC stakeholders workshop on “Internally Displaced Person and the 2015 General Elections” was however greeted by negative response from other stakeholders who apparently disagreed with his position. The stakeholders’ meeting, which had in attendance, state governors: Kashim Shettima (Borno), Ibrahim Gaidam (Yobe) and Nggilari as well as federal lawmakers, civil society organisations and security agencies, was to deliberate on some of the modalities drafted by a taskforce set up by INEC to review ways of enabling IDPS vote during next month’s election. The chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof Attahiru Jega, disclosed that the commission will set up designated centres in various locations in each of these three states for the purpose of distribution of cards and organising of voting for IDPs. He also disclosed that “the centres are to be located outside of the established camps but suitably located to enable all those in camps or in host communities access them easily to vote.” He added that the commission intends to “arrange these centres, such that voting can take place arranged by local government areas, residential areas, and polling units.” He said the commission will work with security agencies to ensure adequate security provision for the planned activities.
