But seeds in particular are an incredible source of lignans, powerful antioxidants that may lower cholesterol, prevent heart disease and osteoporosis. Flax seeds have the greatest amounts of lignans in human diets. Flax seeds contain about 7 times as many lignans as the closest runner-up food (sesame seeds). They contain about 338 times as many lignans as sunflower seeds, 475 times as many as cashew nuts, and 3,200 times as many as peanuts. To reap the benefits of eating flax seeds, they must be ground to release their nutrients.
