Don’t be a Donkey’s Carcass The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Those who leave a gathering after having made no mention of Allah leave it like the corpse of a donkey and suffer remorse.” [Abu Dawud] It is recommended that we spend at least a few moments sincerely remembering Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) whenever we sit together. The remembrance of Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) can take many forms. It could be a mention of His names and attributes and understanding how these attributes operate in our lives. The remembrance of Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) could be contemplation of Allah’s favours upon us and how He honoured us with Islam. The remembrance of Allah is also in the remembrance of His beloved last Messenger (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) and how he established Islam as the law giving and law protecting force in society. Allah’s remembrance is also in discussing the lives of the Sahabah, the generation that He is most pleased with, and in the remembrance of the noteworthy Muslims of later generations, their battles and their zeal to secure His pleasure. And Allah’s remembrance is in the remembrance of everything that He revealed, the realities of the Hereafter and this world.
