Don’t be frightened of this image…seconds later, Georgie had her baby in her arms (see the first photograph of Georgie with her newborn and two other daughters taken by her husband). This ‘crowning’ phase of childbirth is usually the shortest part. The hormonal changes of pregnancy allow this incredible stretching, and as the same hormones withdraw in the weeks after the labour their absence allows everything to return to normal. I never ceased to be amazed at the human body.
