Don’t hesitate viewing candidate’s video – you could be missing your next star. The text resume we use today, was invented by our grand-grandparents during the ‘dark ages” of offline. Throughout the generations, we changed the content, format, bullets, font, length, and so on. But, have you ever wondered if this emotionless document accurately represents a candidate’s potential? For the last decade, there is a growing awareness around the importance of considering one’s soft skills (a part of a mature personality) while placing less emphasis on hard skills (which are a work in progress and will developed over time). And yet, the initial screening process is all about the resume, refusing to mature with the advances of technology, and persisting to stay one-dimensional. Just email me your resume and I will let you know… But in doing so, are you doing your company and a candidate an injustice? From just reading his or her resume, do you have a complete picture of that person’s overall capabilities, such as what truly motivates a candidate to perform? Attached please find an example of a career presentation that gives employers critical insights that are not available on the paper resume. It’s given, for now, that the text resume is here to stay, but I do urge hiring managers, in the interest of effectiveness and productivity of the screening process, to be open-minded and embrace a candidate who in addition to a resume includes a short video presentation. No one can stop the wheels of progress, and when an applicant has the ingenuity and courage to go beyond the call and express her talents in ‘full living color’, don’t hesitate and give it a click. Who knows, she could be your next Ms. Meg Whitman. And yes, the issue of discrimination. In my opinion, is a non-issue, and if a manager is a bigot, s/he will find a reason, any reason, to disqualify a candidate upon meeting them.
