Dorothy Faye Orr: If Michigan republicans have their way, as they most likely will, burning tires and other solid waste will soon be considered ‘clean energy.’ Working on behalf of their corporate sponsors, Michigan republicans went to Lansing with a plan to help the state’s energy companies meet new clean energy standards, which were signed into law in 2008. The plan? Change the definition of ‘clean energy’ so that it includes things that are anything but clean. According to Michigan’s science-denying republicans, HB 5205, sponsored by right wing state representative Aric Nesbitt, is designed to “remove barriers to the use of solid waste as a clean energy source.” It’s simple, really. Science and facts are just pesky ‘barriers’ which are standing between Michigan’s energy companies and the profits they so deeply desire. So are those pesky little things called words, which tend to have definitions.
