Dorset Freemasons in the Community - On Saturday 27 September several Brethren from the Lodge of St Cuthberga 622, along with members of the public visited a major archaeological dig at Druce Farm near Puddletown. W Bro.Robert Heaton, a member of St Cuthberga, who is actively involved in the excavation and exploration of the site, kindly provided an informative and fascinating tour of the Roman Villa and its surrounding buildings. Druce Farm Roman Villa is an excavation led by East Dorset Antiquarian Society (EDAS), which is a highly respected group based in Wimborne. In 2011, EDAS undertook systematic field walking, and retrieved numerous items of Roman building material, suggesting that remains of buildings were present. A subsequent geophysical survey confirmed the existence of three ranges of buildings enclosed within substantial ditches. By 2013 the team had located three buildings and two stunning mosaic pavements. This season, the excavation made far greater progress with a further three mosaic floors, and uncovered extensive areas of a wide range of buildings, including a large aisled hall of national importance. The Roman Villa recently featured on South Today, and the public open day was well attended. Great to see one of our members work, showing Dorset Freemasons active in the community.
