Doubt and dedication often go hand in hand. And faith, crucially, - TopicsExpress

Doubt and dedication often go hand in hand. And faith, crucially, is not assenting intellectually to a series of doctrinal propositions; it is living in conscious and rededicated relationship to God. Nevertheless, the temptation to profess creeds with uncrossed fingers is strong. - Annie Dillard, FOR THE TIME BEING This rings true to me. Many have said it, but I wish I knew to whom I should credit this observation: The opposite of faith is not doubt... the opposite of faith is certainty. I thought of this when I read a recent letter from a reader who rejected a recent Bible-based film because it doesnt agree with God. Either the writer was presuming far too much certain knowledge of Gods mind, or is the first human being in the history of the world to understand Gods opinion of everything. I welcome art that tests and challenges my faith. If my faith cannot live with the doubts that art can inspire, then I need a stronger faith. And if any movie bears any real threat to what Ive accepted as true, then what Ive accepted is not truth at all, for truth is invincible.
