Douglas Carswell was asked by a Bloomberg journalist whether Ukip’s apparent hardline on foreigners using the NHS meant he disagreed with the life-saving treatment afforded to Malala Yousafzai, who was transferred to a specialist hospital in Birmingham after being shot in the head by a Taliban gunman in Pakistan, in October 2012. But Carswell, whether following his party’s hardline, general ignorance or simply being unable to hear the question, said he was “not familiar with that case”. Malala was yesterday awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, becoming its youngest laureate ever. Have a look at this video, I know it’s an American comedy chat show but, this young woman is an inspiration. This was reported in the Independent: “Malala Yousafzai is an amazing and inspiring teenager who yesterday became the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize laureate, aged 17. This is the girl who survived a Taliban assassination attempt, addressed the UN on being an advocate for education for all children and told the president of the United States drone strikes were wrong. But perhaps her greatest achievement came last October, when she left Jon Stewart speechless. Malala, appearing on his The Daily Show, recalled when she found on Google the Taliban were targeting her for daring to speak out in a blog on the BBC News website. “I just could not believe, I said ‘no it’s not true’, and even after the threat I was not worried about myself that much I was worried about my father because we thought that the Taliban are not so cruel to kill a child because I was 14 at the time,” she said. Then, in a remark from a 16-year-old that left the usually motor-mouth Stewart lost for words, she added: “But later I started thinking and I used to think that the Talib would come and he would just kill me. But then I said, ‘If he comes, what would you do Malala?’ then I would reply to myself, ‘Malala, just take a shoe and hit him.’ But then I said, ‘If you hit a Talib with your shoe, then there would be no difference between you and the Talib. You must not treat others with cruelty and that harshly, you must fight others but through peace and through dialogue and through education.’ Then I said I will tell him how important education is and that ‘I even want education for your children as well.’ And I will tell him, ‘That’s what I want to tell you, now do what you want.” youtube/watch?v=gjGL6YY6oMs#t=551
