Doves are a traditional Christian symbol of love and peace. The grumpy ole dairy farmer is having probably his 45th annual dove shoot, I have been involved with 36 of those dove shoots. A little trivia no one knows, that little bird is the reason my daddy and Lee were good friends from daddy getting the “invite” before I knew Lee…That little bird has formed friendships on that farm for a life time…There is no such thing as a bad time at a dove shoot, maybe a bad shoot with no birds but that is different…When I think of everything it takes to prepare for this one day, it makes me wonder have we all lost our minds…The seed/the fertilizer/the rain/ the lack of rain/the fuel/the preparing of the land/ the time watching for this bird/ the little blinds to hide you/ the money spent on camo/shells/ not to mention guns…Little boys sit in the trees with a dead bird, just hoping one day they too will get to shoot to be that guy “the high man on the field”…On the sideline gals/guys/little children having so much more fun, listening to UGA on the radio (boy do I miss Larry Munson)than the ones in that hot sun trying to bring home supper to their loved ones (that sounded good, huh?)…Then there is the big feast at night…a treasured memory: grumpy ole dairy farmer put Dianne in charge of biscuits, and as we all know…yep, she had hired someone to come make them for her, but hey she got’er done or should I say them done!!! But then I think of all the footsteps of those on that field that we will never get to experience again…There was Wallace Land who one day they had no birds so they threw up Uncle Hollis’s hat and shot it, needless to say Hollis not a happy camper…There was Mr. Bill, whose job was to drive all the pretty women around and pick up birds ( I can still hear his laugh today)…There was Kyle Wester who shot with Darrell and Tyler saying he wish Mr. Lee was his daddy because he had killed more birds than his dad…My dad that Cooper Gunby swears if you ever bent over to pick up a bird, daddy would shoot to sting you…and then of course our Ben ( whose blind will go down in history)…This is our Christmas in September for our family and friends…we treasure these memories, we truly love all of those that help to prepare the field/ prepare the meals/ give us unselfishly of their time…Yes this year is going to be tough without Ben but it’s friends like all of you that will get all of Janet’s family through this and give them some “love” and “peace”…just like the that little dove!!!!
