Coinciding with the Thanksgiving Holiday and the kickoff of the holiday shopping season, #GivingTuesday inspires people to take collaborative action to improve their local communities, give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they support and help create a better world. The seven Allentown Arts Organizations plan to leverage this national movement to increase awareness about the sustainability of the arts and to raise funds for each organization on this day of giving. For the past six months, the Downtown Allentown Arts Group have been meeting to establish collaborative partnerships that will augment and contribute to the vision of downtown Allentown as a thriving, dynamic environment drawing all generations and identities and branded as a unique place to work and a phenomenal place to live. The consortium of arts organizations in downtown firmly believe that art and culture play a seminal role in shaping communities’ social, physical, and economic futures. For Allentown to succeed as both a destination, and as a remarkable place to live and work, the cultural economy needs development and sustainability. By using the hashtag #GivingTuesday, these seven arts organizations will raise public awareness to their organizations and the unique strengths and offerings of each partner. Participants will be able to donate through iheARTallentown.org or by text on the day of the event. Funds raised through #GivingTuesdaycan be designated directly to the organization of the donor’s choice, or an option is provided for gifts to be shared by all organizations equally. The funds raised during this one-day event will help to offset costs of future programming and expansion of community events. The arts are an example of a society’s true prosperity. They spark creativity and innovation and have a high communal impact. Support for the arts is vitality important to any city as the arts are not only an educational, cultural and humanistic benefit to a region’s citizens, they also are an economic stimulator in their own right. The nonprofit arts industry generates $135 billion in national economic activity annually, drive local tourism and share the benefits of out-of-town visitors with their for profit counterparts by encouraging the patronage of hotel rooms, restaurants and shops. About #GivingTuesday Two years ago, after seeing an opportunity to channel the generous spirit of the holiday season to inspire action around charitable giving, a group of friends and partners, led by the 92nd Street Y (92Y), came together to find ways to promote and celebrate the great American tradition of giving. Their concept gained steam, and with the help of the United Nations Foundation and other founding partners, more than 10,000 organizations have joined the movement and are providing creative ways people can embrace #GivingTuesday and be collaborate in their giving efforts to create more meaningful results. #GivingTuesday is a movement to celebrate and provide incentives to give. It will culminate with a global day of giving on December 2, 2014.
