Downtown (Broadway and 48th St) - In 1964, Tony Hatch, visiting New York first time, was walking from his hotel by Central Park along Broadway. As the neon lights came on at 48th St, the melody for the classic song Downtown was in his head. He thought he was already Downtown at Times Square. Singer Petula Clark was born today. This is Susan Harrison in Sweet Smell of Success (1957) lingering on the sidewalk where the neon signs are pretty. Directed by Alexander Mackendrick. Cinematography James Wong Howe. 48th is behind her where neon lights nearby would include Tango Palace, Flame Steaks, Castro, Metropole Cafe, and Strand Theater. Brill Building is in front of her. Hatch was visiting music publishers that day. Video for Downtown: https://youtube/watch?v=Zx06XNfDvk0
