Dr. Ahmad Abubakar Mahmud Gumi WHO PAYS THE SCHOOL FEES OF OUR CHILDREN? We are in September, Children are back to school for the first trimester. For those that care about the quality of their children’s education, children comeback from schools with school fees slips that is exorbitantly high. Parents are demanded to pay through their nose for a child what an average salary earner can probably not get in one year’s salary. For those that are peasant workers, school is not for their children. And nobody cares. The government does not live to its own responsibility. The society is individualistic . Proprietors of private schools have discovered a gold mine. These private schools are springing up here and there, while public schools are decaying and degenerating. Still ironically, people are looking up to a brighter future of progress, peace and development. The trillions of Naira spent on ‘defense’, had it been spent on education for all, would have solved 90% of the security challenges. The amount Nigerians spend on health care inside and outside the country, had it been spent on education would have reduced hospital attendances by more than 80%. Since that is the average percentage of curable communicable diseases that plaque our hospitals. The logic is simple. Education solves the problems of poverty and health by a high percentage. Good societal Health and socioeconomic wellbeing solves insecurity issues. We are truly in trouble because we don’t have leaders that listen, and when they hear they don’t care, and when they even bother they don’t act and when they act it’s either too little or too late or both. Oh Allah! With You we seek refuge!
