Dr. Barry Hester, Division Chair-Science & Technology, was handing out parcels of peanuts along with a pamphlet in celebration of Black History Month. The significance of the peanuts became clear once students read the pamphlet…It was about a man born into slavery who went on to become one of the most prominent scientists and inventors of his time, George Washington Carver. George Washington Carver was a teacher at the Tuskegee Institute. Carver devised over 100 products using the peanut, including dyes, plastics and gasoline. Dr. Hester shared more information about other past notable African American Scientists- Benjamin Banneker, astronomer, mathematician and author who constructed America’s first functional clock, Charles Drew, physician, surgeon and medical researcher known as the inventor of the blood bank, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, physician who performed the first prototype open-heart surgery, and Garrett Morgan, inventor who made the first traffic signal invention and the first patented gas mask. There’s a display, highlighting George Washington Carver, in the lobby of Lewis Collier Hall.
