Dr. Catalina Cabrera, from the veterinary hospital’s Livestock Herd Health and Reproduction Service, traveled to the Republic of Georgia twice in the past few years to help improve beef and pork production conditions in the former Soviet region. Nepals dairy cows play an important role in maintaining sustainable food production, and its contribution to the national economy through milk is remarkable. However, poor reproductive performance is a major problem in dairy production and no/limited technologies and knowledge are available to manage reproductive disorders of dairy cattle and buffalo. Dr Cabrera trained a group of young veterinarians, scientists and officers from various agencies and institutions on infertility management in dairy animals with emphasis given to possible causes, diagnosis methods and treatments. She also highlighted the need for local research and producers outreach to improve nutrition status in cattle, incorporate appropriate genetics, divulgate information about reproductive aids and diseases and to stimulate teamwork. Through this assignment, the UCDavis School of Veterinary Medicine contributes to the improvement of production and health of dairy cattle and water buffalo in Nepal.
