Dr. Diamonds great thesis is that Europeans by the luck of location, climate and chance ended up with Wheat and Beef, carbohydrate and protein. This superior combination (think hamburgers) gave my ancestors a chance to have free time. People living on taro root and monkey meat or corn and venison or rice and fish did not have as much time for art, literature, and science. Our folks free time (and the need) led to the inventions of algebra and geometry, steel, and eventually things like railroads, steel ships, skyscrapers, science... and guns. But he also makes a point about germs. Europeans living with cows developed immune systems that the rest of the world did not develop. We often conquered by our germs. We were the invaders who brought death by horrible illnesses, at least thats a big part of the picture. Humans are always trying to figure out cause-and-effect relationships (and seldom get it right). Our branch of the family tree is not in any way superior to any others, not smarter, and not predestined by God to dominate, destroy or enslave. I think the reaction to Ebola is explained in Diamonds understanding... now a Taro Root, Monkey-eating society is showing up with a disease we are not immune to. And our wrong understanding of who we are as the Superior White European Disease Bringers is not going to change easily. South Carolina wants us to quickly euthanize everyone with Ebola and sterilize... like V-ger in Star Trek, as if its not a disease of fruit bats, chimps, antelope, and fish that humans sometimes get. Louisiana didnt want Eric Thomas ashes to enter their state (which must be the state of fear and ignorance). Oh the pillars are shaking.
