Dr. Geraldine Valencia-Go has been with the School of Nursing - TopicsExpress

Dr. Geraldine Valencia-Go has been with the School of Nursing since 1989. And in those 25 years, save for a couple of semesters on sabbatical and a few years as chair of the undergraduate nursing program, she has taught a bedrock course in the education of every CNR nurse: NUR 209, Foundations of Nursing Practice. They all have to go through me, Valencia-Go said with a laugh. Its the first clinical course in the program, and where students learn 90 percent of the skills they will use as nurses, she said. Just from teaching that course, Valencia-Go has had a close-up look at the changes in education, the nursing profession, and society in general. When she first arrived at CNR, the majority of students were middle class or upper middle class, she said. There were very few minorities, no transfers, no men, and no students pursuing nursing as a second degree.
