Dr. Gore answers: For kidney cancer survivors, what should they do to reduce risk of recurrence? Patients frequently ask how they may decrease their risk of the cancer coming back, or recurring. There are no dietary recommendations for prevention of kidney cancer recurrence, but some patients may have to make dietary adjustments if their kidney function is lower after removal of all or part of one kidney. In general, we advocate that patients continue to pursue health behaviors such as regular exercise and maintenance of a low fat, high fiber, heart healthy diet. It may not change the risk of kidney cancer recurrence, but it will help maintain your overall health so that decisions about treatment are not limited by your health.
