Dr. J. B. Danquah Dr. J. B. Danquah was a distinguished politician with a towering credential as a lawyer, journalist and historian. This is a fact no one can dispute. As far back as 1920 he earned a PhD in law from the University of London. His involvement in the independence struggle for our dear country in the mid-1920s through the 1940s is well documented. His literary works on Akan history, and all that, is well known. It is not for nothing that he is often described as the ‘doyen of Ghanaian politics.’ Dr. J. B. Danquah certainly deserves a place in our history, to be celebrated as a nationalist who contributed towards our independence, especially in the early years. I think his adherents do him a lot of disservice when they place him in the shadow of Kwame Nkrumah. There are multitudes of New Patriotic Party supporters today who know next to nothing about the attainments of Dr. J. B. Danquah. And this is becausemost leaders in the party are fixated about the astronomical heights of the Nkrumah legacy. Let me say, with irrevocable emphasis, that the world’s mind is already made up about Kwame Nkrumah. Several intellectual enclaves around the world have subjected his persona to a lot of rigorous and analytical scrutiny. The results have always been the same: he was a man sincerely committed to the struggle to uplift the image and dignity of Africans and black people everywhere in the world. Those in disagreement have always been in the minority. And that is why the world continues to celebrate the man. And so for those who want the world to equally celebrate Dr. J. B. Danquah they should tell the world what his achievements were. They should stop this business of always going about with a hammer and chisel in hand looking for Nkrumah monuments to dent. It is my prayer that the youth of the New Patriotic Party would not listen to their leaders who seek to entrap them into the rivalries of yore. For our generation, ours should be a commitment to building bridges of friendship and cooperation even while we disagree politically.
